AoU Research Priorities Use Cases

What are the multi-level, immune-mediated, environmental exposure endotype pathways of environmental illness? Asthma/allergies?

Focusing recruitment on communities with a disproportionate burden of environmental exposure (such as Western New York), develop and test a multi-level model to ascertain the burden of environmental illness symptom clusters, asthma, and allergies attributable to environmental factors at the 1) community/neighborhood, 2) household, 3) personal, 4) internal body burden 5) inflammatory biomarker response levels over time. Ascertain how genetic variation mediates these relationships.

The remaining questions allow you to outline in more detail the information needed to address your research question. The series of questions allow up to five entries. If you have more than five entries, please try to prioritize them and enter the remainder in the final field. When done, click Submit at the bottom. No

Select your required Data Item #1, which is most important to your study. This would be an item that needs to be generated and collected from different sources using various procedures, tools, techniques, assays, etc. If not in the current selection, please enter it in the textbox below. Environmental exposure

If you did not find your method for obtaining Data Item #1 in the dropdown selection above, please enter it here. NHANES-style toxicology panel (e.g. PAH's, VOC metabolites, Phthalates, heavy metals, flame retardants, dioxins, parabens, PFOS/PFOA isomers, pesticides, etc.). Surveys of occupational exposure, work and daily life exposure, personal care products, tobacco smoke exposure, characteristics of current residence are also key.

Are there specifications that apply to the method by which Data Item #1 will be obtained, e.g., is the measurement taken once a year, every month, or some other variation? If you do not find your specification in the dropdown, you may enter it in the textbox below. Every three years

If you did not find your methodology specifications for Data Item #1 above, please enter it here. every 3-5 years.

Data Item #2 Air pollution measurements

If Method #2 was not in the dropdown, please enter it here Link to publicly available ambient, land use regression, utilize household area and personal wearable monitors.

If Specification #2 was not in the dropdown, please enter it here: Continuous as available/technology enabled, include temperature and humidity.

If Data Item #3 was not in the dropdown, please enter it here Pulmonary function test

Method #3 Clinical diagnostic tests

If Specification #3 was not in the dropdown, please enter it here 3-5 years

Data Item #4 Allergens

Method #4 Skin allergy test

If Data Item #5 was not in the dropdown, please enter it here Environmental Intolerance/Sensitivity Symptom Questionnaire

Method #5 Survey

Specification #5 Once per year

If you have more than five data items, you may enter them here.

Household dust analysis for microbial, allergen, and chemical content analysis. Cytokine panel (include auto-inflammatory markers), additional community-level covariates (violence, cohesion, etc.), use informatics approach and Comparative Toxicogenomic Database (http://ctdbase.org) to select genes to test for priority chemicals found in body burden/household dust results. As able, use EHR to verify measures/sensitivity analyses.
