Are there patient characteristics that predict resilience to and coping strategies and treatments chosen for recurrent pain?

Identify subsets of All of Us participants with chronic pain of various types. Administer questionnaire that asks in general about coping mechanisms, self-perceived pain tolerance, interference of pain disorder with function, child and adult exposures to adverse life experiences, history of depression/PTSD, drivers of decision of whether or not to treat an episode of pain, use of pharmacological therapies, use of non-pharmacological ...more »

Can meditation be used to decrease pain medication required after a painful procedure.

If meditation training is provided before a planned painful procedure, and practiced, can it decrease the amount of analgesia needed to achieve comfort after the procedure has been performed? Patients should be offered meditation training anticipating a planned procedure and have them practice the technique for at least a week prior to the procedure. (Ideally they would not be in pain while being taught or practicing.) ...more »

What is the populaton burden of fetal loss attributable to enviornmental exposures (alone or in mixtures)?

Characterize maternal and paternal individual exposure to environmental chemicals and metals using questionnaire data and environmental chemicals (as well as GIS for airborne and water exposures). Track fetal loss in different population strata. Determine the risk of fetal loss associated with single exposures and exposure mixtures, and then the population burden of fetal loss attributable to environmental exposures. ...more »

What is the functional mechanism when environmental exposures are associated with human health effects? Vary by age of exposure?

Using biospecimens of persons of varying ages, characterize exposure to environmental chemicals and metals over time and conduct omics studies to identify the functional mechanism of observed health effects - gene expression, metabolomics, epigenetics and genetic variants. Most important, have a plan for integrating the findings of these various studies.

What factors predict successful long-term weight loss maintenance?

>60% of U.S. adults are classified as overweight/obese. Treatments to promote long-term weight loss (e.g. behavioral, pharmacological, surgical) are often not successful and result in high variability across individuals. Measurement of potential predictors from multiple domains (behavioral, biological, environmental, and psychosocial) can help identify the factors that best predict success in response to intentional weight ...more »

Identify the factors that prevent US women from successfully reaching the 2 year mark WHO recommends for breastfeeding

Breast feeding moms should fill out a survey the day their baby is born, weekly after that either until they fail, or until they reach the two year mark. The survey will address pain, support, stress, physical obsticles, baby's abilities to suckle, and work-related obsticles to determine the root of US failure.

Target 80% HBCU campuses.Test, research # of students impacted and prior knowledge; Most are not informed and updated on conception options if desired. Have campus debates on issue and live stream some to bring awareness and broad education. Conduct research to identify the factors that prevent women from successfully breastfeeding for the 2 years suggested by WHO.

Support worldwide for moms breastfeeding is sub-par at best. Statistically, we know American moms do not come close to meeting the two year breastfeeding expectation set by WHO. Breast feeding moms should fill out a survey the day their baby is born, weekly after that either until they fail or until they reach the two year mark. The survey will address pain, support, stress, physical obsticles, baby's abilities to ...more »

Determine and manipulate candidate genes for comitant strabismus

In October 2017, Jiang Zhang and Toshihiko Matuso have published "MGSTX and WNT2 are candidate genes for comitant strabismus susceptibility in Japanese patients" (PeerJ 5:33935). I suggest replicating this study in other national groups. Then, knock-out the identified genes in animal models before proceeding to human therapy.

Do blood biomarkers predict mood transitions for peripartum mood disorder (PPMD)?

Mood disorder in pregnant and postpartum women is common, often severe, but frequently undiagnosed and untreated, and largely understudied. I propose to augment the AllofUs protocol for research into PPMD by adding collection of biospecimens for OMIC measurements at fixed times relative to pregnancy, and also when triggered by alerts of critical clinical mood state shifts as informed by wearable technology or computerized ...more »

Do patients have better outcomes post- routine heart catheterization than those who elect to not have the procedure?

Every year over one million heart catheterizations are performed in the United States alone. This study would aim to find if these procedures truly benefit the patient or if they are unnecessarily performed. In order to get accurate results the study would need to take place over a 3-5 year time frame comparing those who had the procedure and those who elected to forgo. The study would monitor the subjects' cardiac-related ...more »
