Why do some previosuly healthy infants and toddlers develop severe lower respiratory tract infections with common viruses?

This would be designed as a prospective observational cohort study of children (infants to 2 year olds) with common seasonal respiratory viral illnesses (RSV, enterovirus/rhinovirus, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza, influenza).
